Recycling

We Are Award Winners!

The National Folk Festival won the 2007 Silver Award in the ACT NOWaste Awards. These are annual awards given out to organisations and businesses that display best practice in reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill. This is the third time the festival has been recognised in these awards and in 2005 won the Bronze Award.

In addition the Festival took out the award in the Best Public Place & Event category.

We would like to thank all the volunteers who help to make our recycling efforts what they are today.

How it works

The Festival has been undertaking some sort of recycling since 1992. Our aim is to send no waste to landfill. This is a big task and requires attendees, volunteers, stallholders and performers to work together.

The Festival has the following systems in place to maximise our recycling efforts:

Putting it in the Bin.

There are 3 Waste Streams at the Festival. Each Waste Stream has an individual bin and is identified by the colour of the bin lid. Just follow the colour code below and you will helping the Festival achieve its’ goal of minimising the amount of waste going to landfill!

The Festival has a relationship with ANU Green whereby all of the compostable waste collected during the event is sent to the HotRot facility at the Australian National University. There it is converted to a rich compost which is then used on the University’s gardens.

No Plastic Bags!

The Festival has spent the last 3 years phasing out the use of plastic bags. All the bags available from the stalls are either paper or made from biodegradable material. In order to support this endeavour we ask that you don’t bring any plastic bags with you into the Festival. Instead why not use a paper, cloth or reusable bag for you belongings! This will make our Garbage Fairy very happy.

Recycling for Campers

We are trying to improve the recycling in the campground. If you are planning on camping at the Festival please download a copy of the Campers Guide from the Festival Camping page.
