2010 National Folklore Conference

An annual conference facilitated by the Australian Folklore Network, the National Library of Australia, the National Folk Festival and the Centre for Advanced Studies in Australia, Asia and the Pacific, Curtin University.

Building on the success of the previous five Australian National Folklore Conferences, the Australian Folklore Network, the National Library of Australia and the National Folk Festival will again host a one-day conference immediately before the National Folk Festival.

This year’s topics and speakers are:

  • Manganiar and Langa; desert musicians of Rajasthan  - Kevin Bradley
  • Mr Vasilis’s Taksim - Peter Parkhill
  • Pianos in the Bush: The historical role of regional music-making in developing Australia’s cultural identity - Jennifer Gall
  • ‘A Dear Lover of Songs.’ (Sabine Baring-Gould) - Martin Graebe
  • My Spirit – My Darwin – the musical heritage of the Mills family - Jeff Corfield and Allyson Ajibuk Mills
  • That Face on the Barroom Floor: Kenny Goldstein & Collecting Recitations in Australia - Hugh Anderson
  • Whoever Laughs Last, Loses: Classroom Humour as Folk Culture - Robert James Smith
  • Damned Souls and Turning Wheels - Warren Fahey

The conference also features a lunchtime concert on session music produced by Rob and Olya Willis, as well as the availability of new publications and recordings.

The conference is free to attend (there will be a small charge for a brown bag lunch) but it is important to pre-register by email to g.seal(at)curtin.edu.au
